Dental Health

Good oral hygiene is an important factor in achieving a healthier lifestyle, especially in adults. Eating a balanced diet, brushing and flossing daily and regular dental checkups are vital in preventing periodontal disease and maintaining your overall health.

Research has indicated possible links between the bacteria causing gum disease and systemic diseases like cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and pre-term birth; therefore, visiting your periodontist regularly is imperative. In addition to examining and cleaning your teeth, your periodontist will screen you for oral cancer, which generally occurs in people ages 45 and older.

Having a healthy smile as you get older isn’t just for aesthetic reasons. It keeps you on the road to optimum oral health.

Prevention

Periodontal Maintenance

Supportive periodontal treatment (SPT) is part of periodontal therapy for patients who have a history of periodontal disease. It is a continuation of active periodontal therapy. Our office will work very closely with your general dentist to make sure you are closely supervised. This involves an update of your medical and dental history, a periodontal exam, an examination of the teeth and soft tissues. Radiographs will be updated and reviewed as necessary. At each visit, your plaque control will be evaluated and oral hygiene instructions will be reviewed. Subgingival scaling is also performed.

This therapy allows the disease and conditions to be monitored closely, and to minimize the progression and reoccurrence of periodontal disease once it has been treated. It also allows for early diagnosis and treatment of other diseases in the mouth.
